Benefiting from Biodiversity
A WFED video production, April 1997
    In Brief
This short ten minute video, produced for a general audience, emphasises the important role that biodiversity plays in the health of planet Earth.  It begins with a simple definition of the term, 'biodiversity', and goes on to describe the various benefits that humans have derived from this valuable living resource, using examples from the Costa Rican experience through interviews with several conservation professionals in the field including: Dr. Rodrigo Gámez, Director of Costa Rica's National Institute of Biodiversity (INBio); Alvaro Ugalde, one of the founders of Costa Rica’s system of national parks and conservation areas; Ana Sittenfeld, a microbiologist working at INBio and the University of Costa Rica; and, Alex Villegas a Costa Rican ornithologist and tropical biologist.  This video delivers a strong but simple message, stressing the value of all biodiversity to our own future health and survival.  The overview of relevant issues presented in the video make it especially suitable as an introductory piece for students of conservation biology, tropical studies, and social science focusing on the economics and politics of environment and development.
