On this page: Purpose, Strategies, Focus
Purpose WFED seeks to prevent and resolve environmental conflicts, promote equitable and sustainable biological resource conservation and development, and improve public understanding of these issues.
Strategies
WFED provides:
- Conflict assessment and resolution services to improve the ability of the international community to equitably and efficiently identify, prevent, and resolve environment and development conflicts.
-
Assistance to governments and natural resources managers to develop equitable and efficient biodiversity access regimes and benefit-sharing agreements to promote nature conservation.
-
Timely, accurate, and effective public education tools to illustrate biodiversity conservation conflicts, obstacles and solutions.
Focus
WFED focuses its global initiatives on promoting the equitable and efficient sharing of benefits from natural products derived from biodiversity. Natural products may include important new medicines and other products beneficial to society and the environment, such as industrial enzymes and biological remediation techniques. Benefits can range from the exchange of scientific knowledge and the strengthening of collaborative research relationships to financial remunerations for conservation efforts.
WFED achieves these initiatives by designing and implementing legal and economic conservation tools that facilitate and control the access and use of biological resources in the United States and abroad.
