MARINE AND COASTAL SPECIES HOMEPAGES
150 Species Home Pages of the most common marine and coastal organisms of the
Area de Conservación Guanacaste (ACG) for worldwide use

In brief

WFED is cooperating with Costa Rica's Area de Conservación Guanacaste (ACG) on the development of a 'Species Homepages Project' to support marine research and conservation activities at ACG on the Pacific northwest coast of Costa Rica.  The pilot demonstration project involves the establishment of an integrated biodiversity information management system linking detailed taxonomic information on 150 marine and coastal organisms to a website accessible by researchers and the general public internationally.  Click here to view a sample 'species homepage' developed by ACG.

Costa Rica's extensive system of national parks and conservation areas includes several coastal and marine ecosystems.  Historically, these areas have not received the same levels of support attracted by the "rain forests" and other highly publicized environmental resources.  Accordingly, this project seeks to emphasize the great importance of Costa Rica's marine and coastal resources to a broad international audience.

WFED is proud to be associated with this project that will continue to strengthen ACG's role as an important science education center for Costa Ricaand the world.

Objectives

  • To strengthen ACG's coastal and marine biodiversity inventory initiative
  • To incorporate the role of local communities and fishermen in the project's implementation
  • To create highly innovative and useful 'species homepages' for global public education through the internet (thereby making ACG's otherwise remote coastal and marine biological resources available for study and appreciation)
  • To serve as a pilot integrated marine biodiversity information management project for other coastal areas of Costa Rica and elsewhere in Central America and the Caribbean
  • To highlight the importance of international cooperation to save, know and use valuable coastal and marine biological resources for conservation purposes globally
