- Charles Darwin
![]() WFED Educational Excursions are custom-designed programs for students, professionals and other interested participants in which WFED's first-hand experience with important environment and development issues are translated into lessons that trip participants can experience for themselves. Central American excursions can be conducted in English or Spanish depending on the needs of participants, and all excursions can be designed to complement academic curricula through special focus on specific issues and disciplinary perspectives. In every excursion, participants are encouraged to increase their knowledge and awareness of key conservation issues in an interdisciplinary context through in-the-field workshops and exploration with local guides and interpreters. Lessons drawn from practical applications of biology, ecology, geography, geology and the social sciences focus attention on the complex web of interrelationships that characterize natural ecosystems and the ways these are impacted by human activities. WFED Educational Excursions are intellectually and physically challenging and are ususally limited to not more than 20 participants to maximize opportunities for individual adventure experience. As part of its education and outreach activities, WFED has organized environmental excursions to Central America since 1994. In May 1997, WFED organized a special workshop for participants from Yellowstone and other U.S. National Parks in conjunction with President Clinton's state visit to Costa Rica, which included a ceremony in Braulio Carrillo National Park with President and Mrs. Clinton. In addition to its network of local resource persons and contacts in Central America, WFED staff are fluent in Spanish and highly knowledge about Costa Rica and its conservation areas. |
