Life at Yellowstone - Making the Invisible, Visible

YELLOWSTONE Revealed Video Cover "Life too small to see in waters too hot to touch... and from these discoveries a new way of looking at Yellowstone was revealed."

        - from YELLOWSTONE Revealed,
        narrated by Walter Cronkite

Millions of people visit Yellowstone National park each year - attracted not only by the spectacular landscape and the rich diversity of animal life protected by the park, but also by Yellowstone's famous hot springs and geysers. Old Faithful, the great American natural resource icon, is only one of Yellowstone's estimated 10,000 thermal features. In fact, Yellowstone has a greater concentration of thermal features than the rest of the world combined.

The relatively recent discovery of "life too small to see in waters too hot to touch" at Yellowstone has sparked a renaissance of scientific interest at the park. Research activities at Yellowstone suggest that less than one percent of the life forms living in the park's thermal features have been identified. The biological diversity of Yellowstone's thermal features is so great that it is sometimes compared to the diversity found in tropical rainforests.

Created for Yellowstone by the World Foundation for Environment and Development (WFED), YELLOWSTONE Revealed makes the invisible life being discovered at Yellowstone's hot springs visible for the park visitors for the first time. Narrated by legendary journalist Walter Cronkite with music composed by Grammy Award winner Chip Davis and performed by Mannheim Steamroller, the film was co-produced by WFED with Kurtis Productions, Ltd. of Chicago in cooperation with Yellowstone National Park.

"There are no fences around Yellowstone; its presence resonates throughout the world - an enduring symbol of conservation and stewardship for people everywhere. Our mission is to preserve this place - and other special places like it - for the benefit of present and future generations . . . for all time."

        - Walter Cronkite

Benefiting From Biodiversity $30.00 | 10 minutes

Highlights

This short ten minute video, produced for a general audience, emphasizes the important role that biodiversity plays in the health of planet Earth. It begins with a simple definition of the term, 'biodiversity', and goes on to describe the various benefits that humans have derived from this valuable living resource.

Examples from the Costa Rican experience are given through interviews with several conservation professionals in the field including: Dr. Rodrigo Gámez, Director of Costa Rica's National Institute of Biodiversity (INBio); Alvaro Ugalde, one of the founders of Costa Rica's system of national parks and conservation areas; Ana Sittenfeld, a microbiologist working at INBio and the University of Costa Rica; and Alex Villegas, a Costa Rican ornithologist and tropical biologist.

This video delivers a strong but simple message stressing the value of all biodiversity to our own future health and survival. The overview of relevant issues presented in the video make it especially suitable as an introductory piece for students of conservation biology, tropical studies, and social science focusing on the economics and politics of environment and development.
